Mais importante premiação da TV norte-americana, o Emmy 2017 foi realizado na noite deste domingo, 17, em Los Angeles, nos Estados Unidos, consagrando uma produção inédita no Brasil. A distopia The handsmaid's tale, adaptação da obra de Margaret Atwood para o serviço de streaming Hulu, concorrente da Netflix, levou cinco estatuetas, sendo elas as de Melhor Série, Melhor Direção em Série Dramática (Reed Morano, a primeira mulher a vencer a categoria em 22 anos), Melhor Roteiro, Melhor Atriz para a protagonista Elisabeth Moss e Melhor Atriz Coadjuvante (Ann Dowd).
Big little lies, da HBO, brilhou nas categorias de séries limitadas (produções elaboradas com uma quantidade específica de capítulos ou partes). O seriado recebeu a mesma quantidade de prêmios, incluindo Melhor Série Limitada, Melhor Direção (Jean-Marc Vallé), Melhor Atriz (Nicole Kidman), Melhor Atriz Coadjuvante (Laura Dern) e Melhor Ator Coadjuvante para Alexander Skarsgard. Nas categorias de comédia, o destaque foi para Veep, que pelo terceiro ano consecutivo levou Melhor Série de Comédia.
As três produções, em formatos diferentes, têm histórias centradas e lideradas por mulheres, tornando as conquistas da noite ainda mais significativas. De forma menos subjetiva, o tom político não deixou de aparecer na premiação, sobretudo com críticas abertas ao presidente dos Estados Unidos Donald Trump. ''Tínhamos um episódio sobre impeachment, mas não exibimos porque pensávamos que outra pessoa poderia sofrer um impeachment antes'', disse Selina Meyer, de Veep.
O humorista Alec Baldwin, que levou o prêmio de Melhor Ator Coadjuvante em Série Cômica por interpretar o republicano em uma esquete do Saturday night live, também o citou no discurso. ''Acho que deveria dizer: senhor presidente, finalmente, aqui está o seu Emmy'', brincou.

A dramédia Master of none, da Netflix, foi lembrada pelo episódio Thanksgiving, tornando Leva Waithe a primeira mulher negra a receber um Emmy de Melhor Roteiro de Comédia pelo capítulo, prêmio dividido com o criador e protagonista, Aziz Ansari.
Já a consagrada Game of thrones, responsável por angariar 38 Emmys nas suas seis temporadas anteriores, não concorreu neste ano por não ter lançado a sétima a tempo e abriu espaço para outras produções, acirrando a disputa entre emissoras de TV e serviços de streaming, que, juntas, receberam 125 indicações. Black mirror, também da Netflix, levou Melhor Filme para a TV e Melhor Roteiro de Filme para TV (Charlie Brooker).
